    Shadows of Liberty film screening

Doors open at 5:30PM and the screening starts at 6:00PM. Pizza and water are provided for no charge but donations are gratefully accepted to help defray cost.

Shadows Of Liberty reveals the extraordinary money and power behind the news media dictating censorship, cover-ups and corporate control.

Filmmaker Jean-Philippe Tremblay takes an intrepid journey through the dark corridors of the American media landscape where global conglomerates call the shots. For decades their overwhelming influence has distorted journalism and compromised its values.

In highly revealing stories, renowned journalists, activists and academics give insider accounts of a broken media system. Controversial news reports are suppressed, people are censored for speaking out, and lives are shattered as the arena for public expression is turned into a private profit zone.

Tracing the story of media manipulation through the years, Shadows Of Liberty poses a crucial question: why have we let a handful of powerful private corporations write the news? We’re left in no doubt, "...what will save us is when we really know what’s going on, media not filtered through the lens or the microphone of a corporation." Amy Goodman

    Ovarian Psycos film screening
    free

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), and this year, our theme is “Lead with Love.” We want to celebrate the fact that strong, loving communities are key to promoting healthy relationships and supporting survivors of violence. Join us on October 12th to watch an amazing film about the “Ovarian Psycos,” a group of activist women who have created their own cycling space to support each other, reclaim their heritage, and confront the violence in their lives.

On October 19th, we will be getting together again to have an in-depth discussion about the film.

Advocates from the SafeChoice Domestic Violence Program will lead the discussion and also talk about the importance of community, resiliency, and domestic violence services available in the community.

During both weeks, doors open at 5:30pm and the film/discussion starts at 6pm! Pizza and beverages are provided. There is no admission fee but donations to the Friends of Cascade Park Community Library are accepted and appreciated.

NOTE: this film contains some swearing, descriptions of violence, and colorful slang terms for the female body.

American Winter film screening, about the former middle class in Portland
    free

Years after the recession began, millions of families are struggling to meet their basic needs, and many formerly middle class families are finding themselves in financial crisis, and needing assistance for the first time in their lives. Meanwhile, the social safety net that was created to help people in difficult times has been weakened by massive budget cuts, creating a perfect storm of greater need and fewer resources to help families in trouble.

Filmed over the course of one winter in Portland, Oregon, American Winter presents an intimate and emotionally evocative snapshot of the state of our economy as it is playing out in many American families.

Produced and directed by Emmy award-winning filmmakers, Joe and Harry Gantz, American Winter is a documentary feature film that follows the personal stories of families struggling in the aftermath of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
