Defend DACA - 800 Candle Vigil

We are lighitng 800 candles on October 6th to raise local awareness for the 800,000 DACA recipients - 1 candle will symbolically represent 1,000 DACA recipients - in the United States. The executive decision to rescind DACA not only impacts hundreds of thousands of youth across the country, but hundreds here in Washington County. October 6th is the first day the program prevents recipients from renewing their permits.

We hope to count on your support to light a candle and stand in solidarity with Dreamers across the country and in our community.

Understanding Our Implicit Bias: Who, Me? Yes, You. (Hillsboro Reads Closing Keynote)

Our society has encouraged colorblind ideology without taking into consideration the impact it has on people of color. While the intentions may be good, this approach to race, racism, and race relations doesn’t change the fact that in the 21st century race still matters significantly. Statements like “We are all human” and “I don’t notice race” are actually more likely to cause the very harm these well-intentioned statements, said by well-meaning people are trying to avoid. In her keynote, Dr. Hollins will discuss the research on implicit bias, propose alternative ways of thinking, and share strategies for mitigating the impact.

Held at the Civic Center Auditorium.
