No Methanol! No Pipelines! Comment writing workshop

Stop the world's largest fracked gas to methanol refinery!

We currently have a huge opportunity to stop this refinery. Permitting agencies will be accepting public comments soon! Join us for a comment writing workshop at our regularly scheduled monthly meeting, and submit as many comments as possible!

Fossil fuel companies are still trying to build the world’s largest fracked gas to methanol refinery, right here in Washington. The refinery would produce more than 6 million tons of greenhouse gases, equivalent to 1.3 million cars. It’s enormous demand for fracked gas would likely create the rationale to build even more dangerous gas pipeline capacity up and down the I-5 corridor, allowing more fracked gas projects in our communities.

Last year, this project came dangerously close to becoming fully permitted, until the Sierra Club and our partners won a major legal victory, forcing project backers to complete a supplemental environmental impact statement that includes the impacts of fracking, gas transportation, and consumption. Permitting agencies are currently accepting public comment to determine the scope of this supplemental impact statement.

Bishop Marigza on the current crisis in the Philippines

Amidst widespread human rights violations in the Philippines, ICHRP U.S. will bring together victims, legal advocates, and faith and community leaders from across the country to announce plans for an internationally coordinated campaigns to stop the killings in the Philippines. After Trump’s recent visit with President Duterte -- a conversation which paid no heed to human rights -- the U.S. plans to send up to $111 million in military aid to the Philippines, despite over 14,000 extrajudicial killings under Duterte’s regime. As Trump allots greater tax dollars to military, the time for people in the U.S to rise up in solidarity with Filipinos grows increasingly urgent.

More than ever, the broad masses of Filipino people are joining hands in their struggles to attain their rights and in their pursuit of a long-sought just and lasting peace. More than ever, the broad masses of Filipino people need the solidarity and support of the peoples of the world.

Bishop Marigza, the General Secretary of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, will speak from personal experience on the current crisis in the Philippines. The Bishop has been a fearless leader in the movement to hold the Philippine government accountable for extrajudicial killings, disappearances, illegal arrests, and of Rise up for Life and Rights, an organization of families and friends of victims of drug related killings.

Participating Organizations Include: St Luke's Episcopal Church, Jewish Voice for Peace, People Organizing for Philippine Solidarity, Portland Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines, New York Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines, National Lawyer's Guild, PUSO Seattle, and more.
