Film Screening - There Goes The Neighborhood: Gentrification as Class Warfare

Join us for a screening and discussion of sub.Media's Trouble episodes #12 and #13 exploring global resistance to gentrification.

In cities across the world, urban environments are being transformed according to the dictates of capital. Gentrification is destroying the social fabric of neighborhoods and displacing residents in order to make way for a new class of upwardly-mobile professionals – who often view the rich local histories of the spaces they move into as nothing more than kitschy branding appeal. The illusion that gentrification is natural, or even inevitable fact of life, is shattered when people decide to take a stand and fight back. In this two-part documentary, Sub.media looks at the process of gentrification and the fierce resistance that has arisen in the cities of Toronto, Montreal, New Orleans, Istanbul, Berlin, and the Bay Area.

Screening of Submedia's Trouble: Learning to Resist

PDX Rad Movie Night is kicking off with a screening of Submedia's Trouble: Learning to Resist. Come join us for this short film and discussion exploring radical student movements around the world!

With the 50th anniversary of the global uprisings of 1968, subMedia pays homage to the insurgent youth who helped kick things off a half-century ago by taking a look at some contemporary student-led movements that are still tearing things up around the world. This month’s episode of Trouble features current and former student organizers from Puerto Rico, Quebec and Chile as they share their experiences from the high-points of past struggles and provide hard-fought lessons that can help prepare a new generation for the battles to come.
