Right to the City – a radical municipalist reading group
Social Justice Action Center

We’ve crafted a syllabus designed to analyze how space is shaped, and in turn shapes us. To understand how the city is crafted by the forces of globalization and urban planning; institutionally controlled by the military and the bank. And a syllabus that leaves ample time to discuss where we go from here – The Right to the City, Portland’s very own history of neighborhood organizing, and the theory behind the burgeoning worldwide interest in Municipalism.

We meet at the social justice action center monthly – August 13th, 3-5 is the first meeting.

This month, we are beginning the reading group with the “Right to the City” movement and the theory that backs it. You are likely already familiarized with this framework as it has influenced houseless rights’ organizations and Occupy in 2011. The Right to the City unfolds a critical conversation about the human need to shape space and advances the notion of the Commons as an essential political building block.

The homework is here – with videos, theory, and history: bit.ly/right2theCity

Hopefully you will be available to join the conversation; we look forward to your experience, insights, and company.

Topics for all 6 weeks include: 1. The Right to the City 2. Globalization and Urban Planning 3. Portland HIstory 4. Military Urbanism 5. Libertarian Municipalism, Social Ecology and Democratic Confederalism 6. Municipal Movements Across the world.

Follow us here: https://www.facebook.com/dontwaitdemandutopia/

Email us at DemandUtopia@ProtonMail.Com with any questions about this 6-part curriculum, and access the full syllabus here: Bit.Ly/runripcity

Where Do We Go From Here: A Public Assembly
Beacon Sound

Details POST INAUGURATION

We have just witnessed the first week of Donald Trump's presidency. Much of what we have seen and experienced has been incredibly challenging, heartbreaking, frightening, shocking, unconstitutional... The list goes on.

As we continue to act against the most recent atrocities committed by this administration in protest, we also maintain an open dialogue with one another, about what steps to take through out the oncoming days, weeks and months.

Similar to the first assembly, we will begin as one large group, then later split up into smaller groups, each guided minimally by a facilitator. Each group will have a few discussion prompts related to the most recent issues, such as the Muslim ban, "normalization", locality and collectivity as tools for national change.

"Where Do We Go From Here?" is an ongoing public assembly for new and experienced activists to speak, listen, connect & unite together in action for collective change.

Mental Health Care Not Policing- June Coalition Meeting #5 (Critical Resistance Portland)
In Other Words Feminist Community Center

Sunday June 11th 10 am-1 pm Snacks provided Childcare available upon request

Critical Resistance Portland (CR-PDX) is developing a campaign to interrupt the use of police as mental health first responders in Portland. We have seen how policing escalates everyday mental health needs or instances of crisis and can result in violence on our communities. It's crucial that Portland disrupt this pattern and invest in community care.

CR Portland wants to impact protocol and funding of mental health crisis services and we’d like to start pulling together organizations and individuals who could be partners or stake holders in this campaign. This includes social service providers, mental health service users, communities targeted by the police, and other racial and economic justice organizations. We are asking people like you who have valuable knowledge and first hand experiences to get involved with this campaign.

Will you join CR-PDX in demanding a city prioritization of quality user-led mental health services that are community-based and outside the hands of law enforcement? June's meeting will be the 5th meeting of the Mental Health Care, Not Policing community coalition.

We invite those directly impacted by policing, mental health users, and all who want to decrease Portland's reliance on policing to attend. Organizations and individuals who are involved in anti-policing, mental health, or social service work in Portland, join us as partners in this effort and share your ideas at this campaign meeting!

Critical Resistance is a prison industrial complex abolitionist organization which means that to do this work we must work to end racism, white supremacy, patriarchy, capitalism, homophobia and transphobia, anti-blackness, imperialism, and all systems of power that contribute to the caging, separation, harm, surveillance, policing, and killing of ourselves and loved ones, and specifically recognizing that these systems target those in black & brown & queer & trans communities.

The CR PDX chapters members are currently a group of queer & trans folks with a mix of non-black poc and white folks and we all are trained in facilitating spaces with an anti-oppressive and interrupting oppressive moments lens. We are pro-black & brown and queer & trans folks and we committed to hosting events that work to be anti-racist and anti-oppressive.

Please let us know if you will be needing childcare or have specific dietary needs.

Critical Resistance Portland is a political organization, the local chapter of a national organization dedicated to opposing the expansion of the prison industrial complex.

HUMAN Public Outreach Meeting & Committee Workshop
ILWU Local 4, Vancouver

We invite the community to join The Humanitarian United Movement & Action Network (HUMAN) on Sunday, June 11th from 6-9pm at the local ILWU as our board of directors host the very first Public Outreach Meeting and Committee Building Workshop. Many of you were invited because you recently expressed interest in getting involved with one or more of our core, issue-based Committees, including:

  • The Environmental Advocacy Committee
  • The Social Justice & Human Rights Committee
  • The Health & Wellness Committee
  • The Education & Opportunity Committee
  • The Resolutions Committee

Whether you would like to join one of these Committees or just learn a bit more about HUMAN we would love to have you there! The first portion of the meeting will include an introduction of our board, a detailed explanation of our vision for the community, past and upcoming events as well as various ways we plan to take action and become effective advocates on the local and state level. The second portion of the meeting will be for the actual Committee building itself. The respective Chairs of each Committee will divide the group up based on their interests and those groups will exchange contact information and brainstorm ideas for future actions, events, research, resolutions, petitions and community outreach projects. Those who become official Committee members will be linked via email or messenger for ongoing group discussion/communication and will be free to start working together on local issues under the supervision of the Committee Chair.

This is a great way to develop a strong network of advocates and activists and to share ideas and resources so that together we can build lasting progress for our children, our planet and our fellow HUMAN beings.

Hope to see you all there!

PSU Smith Center

PUBLIC SOCIALIST ALTERNATIVE MEETING:

Defeat Trumpcare! Fight for Medicare for all!

EVENT DETAILS

When: Saturday, July 12, 7:00 PM

Where: PSU SMSU 329

Join Socialist Alternative for a public meeting as part of the #OccupyTrumpcare National Day of Action against Trumpcare and to discuss the need for a Medicare-for-all single-payer system.

WHY WE'RE FIGHTING BACK

Trumpcare is a savage attack on working people and the poor. If passed, it will deny tens of millions access to healthcare and represent one of the greatest transfers of wealth from the working class to the 1% in U.S. history through massive tax cuts for the super-rich and corporations.

Trumpcare can be defeated. We need a full mobilization of the opposition to Trumpcare through rallies, protests, and occupations of Republican Senators’ offices nationwide. The Republicans are struggling to overcome internal divisions, but we need to keep the pressure up to ensure defeat of Trumpcare. We need to not just fight back against Trump’s attacks on health care, but for universal single-payer healthcare. There is mass opposition across the country, we need all opponents of Trumpcare to unite behind a strategy of mobilizing the full breadth of that opposition, similar to the mass rallies around Trump’s inauguration when millions marched in the streets. With a well-organized mobilization and an escalating series of mass actions we can help ensure the Republican bill fails. Join Portland Socialist Alternative to discuss next steps in fighting back against Trumpcare.

PDXSol Voz Solidarity Committee Open Meeting
St. Francis Of Assisi Catholic Church

Help build the dream!

Portland Solidarity Network is helping Voz Workers’ Rights Education Project to establish a permanent home at their current site. After years of deadlock in trying to work with the city, Voz has finally entered into negotiations with Prosper Portland (formerly the Portland Development Commission), in order to secure the land they’re located on and build a new, permanent day laborers’ center.

Voz is a worker-led organization that seeks to empower and educate day laborers. The Workers Center on MLK provides a safe place for day laborers to find work, education, and leadership opportunities. It has been a powerful resource, recovering hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen wages, creating over 25,000 jobs since its creation, and establishing a minimum wage for day laborers that has outpaced Oregon’s.

Currently the Workers Center consists of a garage and office trailer. There is no plumbing on-site or permanent bathrooms. In order to Voz to be able to grow, they need a permanent building. And they need the community’s support to get one.

Voz is scheduled to meet Prosper Portland every two weeks to negotiate the transfer of the property on Voz is located at on Northeast MLK. While the two sides agree on much and have made progress on the deal, they remain far apart on some aspects of an agreement. We need to organize a community response to show Prosper Portland that Voz is a valued community resource, and we’re behind them. We’re working with Voz organizers, staff, and allies to conduct research support, and creative actions to win.

If you want to stand with the day laborers of Voz, we’ll be strategizing our next steps at our next meeting. It’ll be next Wednesday, August 9 at 6:30 PM at St Francis of Assisi Church, 1131 SE Oak in Portland. We’ll be meeting in the Hawthorne Room in the church’s southern building.

Indivisible Greater Vancouver, August Monthly Meeting
ILWU Local 4, Vancouver

Hi everyone! Our August 4th meeting is this Friday and we have some important agenda items and great speakers. Here's a sneak peak:

The first speaker, Dianna Mendoza (Catholic Services), works with refugee children and finding foster families for them in Vancouver. This fascinating program resettles youth from a wide variety of nations (either residing in refugee camps or immigration detention centers) into licensed, long-term foster homes. All youth are under 18 at the time of resettlement with no one who can care for them.

Gary Seeman, PhD, will speak briefly and then lead an interactive dialogue with attendees addressing the question, "How's this political climate affecting you?" Lots of take-aways here.

Janet Birgenheier, IGV member, will report on the results from Saturday's IGV Strategic Planning Retreat with proposed changes to our charter and focus moving forward. We need your input, so please attend!

In addition, IGV work groups will report out and new actions will be outlined for the August recess. All are welcome, of course, so bring your ideas, neighbors and friends.

Ragtags Against Doom Food Justice Gathering
Laurelhurst Park

At our last meeting we agreed to link up with anyone growing food from different collectives and communities who wish to join with us in supporting marginalized communites and the grassroots community both to be resilient so that we may opt out succesfully from the exploitative dominant agricultural system by creating a decentralized municipal farm.

We believe doing this will address three world crises relating to food, climate and energy, and plus shift the power back to people struggling with street life and all other forms of survival under capitalism. Food justice is an integral part of racial, economic, social, and climate justice, worldwide. Together we can build a more equitable, localized, sustainable solution to hunger.

At this meeting we will hear a report back from the affinity group known as the "Divergence" and possibly other affinity groups, begin discussing the work already being done by other groups in the city of Portland with a similar focus, seek out how to build a municipal decentralized farm with allies, create teams to take on roles and tasks, prepare for 2018 and put together a text alert system.

Gathering at noon.

Meeting starts at 12:30 P.M.

Bark Base Camp Volunteer Planning Meeting
Bark Dugout

Volunteer to support Bark's Base Camp! Attend this planning meeting on Monday, August 7th from 6-8pm at the Bark Dugout: 351 NE 18th Ave in Portland.

All are invited to this meeting who are interested in helping plan our Base Camp, which will be out in the forest August 24th – September 7thin the Crystal Clear Timber Sale.

At this meeting, we’ll share information and answer questions about the camp. We will also provide a list of roles which we’ll be trying to fill relating to camp outreach, logistics, and donations. This is a great way to plug into Bark's work this summer and get involved. Help us make this camp the best one ever!

Bark is awesome! Bark is the resource for community action to protect Mt. Hood National Forest and surrounding federal lands. We prioritize grassroots organizing and believe in the power of an engaged public. We recognize that the forest should thrive not just to provide resources for the human community, but also for the inherent value of nature itself. We maintain an organizational culture that is transparent, inclusive and cooperative, where volunteers, staff and board work together to realize the vision of Bark.

What does BARK stand for? Bark’s name originates from the barker, who stands before the public and uses persistent outcry to call attention. We are a group of barkers, ensuring that the public hears about all events, good and bad, occurring in the Mt. Hood National Forest.

First Amendment bill, Endorsement Update & More w/BerniePDX
The Watershed

Excape the heat & join us to hear about a really important bill in the US Congress that raises serious first amendment concerns – and has support from Democrats like Senator Wyden.

According to CREDO, the bill (S. 720/H.R. 1697) is so broad that if the government claims that your decision to boycott a company "furthers or supports" a boycott issued by a group like the United Nations Human Rights Commission, prosecutors could charge you with a felony, huge fines, and sentence you to prison. Learn about this bill and what we can do to help stop it!

We'll give an update on the Oregon House race to appoint someone to Rep. Ann Lininger's seat (HD-38), for which BerniePDX sent out a candidate endorsement questionnaire (check it out here: http://bit.ly/2fa6rSz). And we'll talk about our next potential endorsement!

WE Lead Meeting
Prospect

Many women in my circle, graduated college some time ago, working in their steady job, want a change! They want more! More challenge, more income, more responsibility, more title, more out of their career! Wheter they want something different or more out of what they already have, they want more! If this sounds like you join us! Many of us can't afford a life coach or individual program to do this work, so we are going to come together to do it as a group. Together we can share the cost, the journey, and the reward!
