Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG)'s Portland Election Watch Happy Hour & Fundraiser
Lucky Labrador Brew Pub

PORTLANDIANS & Oregonians!: Interested in ensuring fair elections in our country? Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) Foundation is launching a groundbreaking, non-partisan Election Watch program and we need your help! http://www.lawyersforgoodgovernment.org/

Think voter suppression and erosion of voting rights cannot happen in Oregon? Think again.

Exhibit 1: Oregon Proof of Citizenship to Vote Initiative. Signatures are now being sought to put this on the 2018 ballot. It calls for CLEARING Oregon's Voter Rolls by 2020, at which time anyone wanting to vote MUST register (again), but this time with proof of US citizenship. Let that sink in.

We will be discussing this issue, and other voting issues - as well as the new non-partisan ELECTION WATCH program - on 8/29, 6-8 pm at the Lucky Lab SE. The event is FREE and more info is in the "about" section in this post.

Election Watch will be the first nationwide program to ensure that at least one trained volunteer lawyer is in every county in the U.S. for the purpose of proactively addressing voter suppression BEFORE an election, as opposed to litigating after the damage is done. http://www.lawyersforgoodgovernment.org/blog/electionwatch

Come to the Portland Election Watch #SpiritedVoting HAPPY HOUR & Fundraiser event on 8/29 at the SE location of “Lucky Lab” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to learn more about the program and help us raise the money we need to get it off the ground. The suggested donation for this event is $20, but feel free to donate MORE, or less. You can donate online here: http://www.lawyersforgoodgovernment.org/donate OR bring cash or a check made out to "Lawyers for Good Government Foundation."

Hope to see you there!

#SpiritedVoting is a fundraising effort to support Election Watch, a project by the Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) Foundation, which is organized as a nonprofit and is seeking a 501(c)(3) tax-exemption designation. Upon the Foundation's receipt of an exemption determination from the IRS, contributions will be tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Re- Legalizing Housing Options in Portland, the Happy Hour
Pizza Baron

NOTE: Please click the tickets link (event is free!) to the EventBrite page and reserve your spot. Space is limited. We will book more HH's if there is demand!

  • Having trouble paying your rent?
  • Can't afford to buy?
  • Need better access to transit?

Portland faces a housing shortage. And many Portlanders don't like McMansions going up on their streets, especially when they replace otherwise good structures. Portlanders also wonder sometimes why more neighborhoods in the city aren't being built to resemble the now-expensive ones within a few miles of downtown that are in such high demand. The reason is that it's currently illegal to build neighborhoods like those.

In 1959, Portland banned most new small multifamily dwellings like duplexes, four-plexes and internal home divisions -- the same small, efficient homes that continue to make corner stores and frequent buses viable in Portland's most beloved, walkable neighborhoods. Neighborhoods built out under newer, less-dense zoning rules might never support frequent buslines ... unless we change the rules.

Join Portland for Everyone on Tuesday September 5 at Pizza Baron, near SE Divison & 122nd, for a short presentation and community discussion around Portland's brief window of opportunity to re-legalize aspects of the city we love. A representative from the Portland for Everyone campaign will present, followed by a discussion and Q&A.

Doors Open with Food & Beverages: 6:00 pm Presentation: 6:30 pm Discussion: Following presentation/ Until 7:30 pm

We will focus on the decisions being made soon through the Residential Infill Project, a once-in-a-generation chance to once again allow more types of "missing middle" housing in more of the city: more affordable, lower-profile, energy-efficient homes that would help more of us age in place and give developers something better to build than another McMansion. We will also beirfly touch on the changes that may happen in Portland's multi-dwelling (apartment) zones.

Please RSVP here so we know to plan for you!!

2017-2018 presents a rare but brief window of opportunity: Portland will be making critical land use and policy decisions over the next 18 months that will impact our city’s livability for decades. To ensure a Portland that is affordable and accessible for all residents, our civic leaders can and must do more.

About the campaign: Portland for Everyone, a project of 1000 Friends of Oregon, is a growing coalition of organizations and community groups that support diverse, abundant, and affordable housing options citywide, and connecting them with opportunities to share their stories and take action.

Portland can learn from both the successes of other cities and regions that face similar challenges. We can and must make the right choices on landmark land-use decisions: One set of choices will strengthen the ability of all to live, work, and play throughout Portland, with increased access to reliable transportation and open spaces. Another set of choices will squeeze those of middle and low incomes out of the city and increase homelessness, with disproportionate impact on people of color, immigrants and refugees, and the elderly, taking them away from employment centers, transportation options, and their communities. Together, we will encourage the City Council and other civic leaders to make inclusive and equitable decisions that will enable Portland to become a more equitable and affordable place. Visit the P4E website to take action now.

We hope to see you there!
