Food Chains - The Revolution In America's Fields
First Unitarian Church, Eliot Chapel

Doors open at 6:30PM.

Screening of "FOOD CHAINS - The Revolution in America’s Fields"

In this exposé, an intrepid group of Florida farmworkers battle to defeat the $4 trillion global supermarket industry through their ingenious Fair Food program, which partners with growers and retailers to improve working conditions for farm laborers in the United States.

There is more interest in food these days than ever, yet there is very little interest in the hands that pick it. Farmworkers, the foundation of our fresh food industry, are routinely abused and robbed of wages. In extreme cases they can be beaten, sexually harassed or even enslaved – all within the borders of the United States.

Food Chains reveals the human cost in our food supply and the complicity of large buyers of produce like fast food and supermarkets. Fast food is big, but supermarkets are bigger – earning $4 trillion globally. They have tremendous power over the agricultural system. Over the past 3 decades they have drained revenue from their supply chain leaving farmworkers in poverty and forced to work under subhuman conditions. Yet many take no responsibility for this.

The narrative of the film focuses on an intrepid and highly lauded group of tomato pickers from Southern Florida – the Coalition of Immokalee Workers or CIW – who are revolutionizing farm labor. Their story is one of hope and promise for the triumph of morality over corporate greed – to ensure a dignified life for farm workers and a more humane, transparent food chain.

Screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Leecia Anderson, Western Farm Workers Association and Ramon Ramirez, PCUN (Woodburn-based farm workers union).

Admission: $5-20 donation requested; no one turned away for lack of funds.

Standing Together for Justice (Buddhist Peace Fellowship, Portland)
Lownsdale Square

Join us as we meet at the foot of the towering war memorial in Lownsdale Square during the hour before the rallies of June 4. If the weather is dry, we can sit; if it rains we will stand.

We will be meditating on the dissolution of white supremacy, on safety for all who are targets of hatred, and on safety for all who stand with those who are targeted or threatened.

At 12:30 all meditators may either continue meditating in place or may join any of several rallies being held in the area. We will meditate with our eyes open, aware of what surrounds us, mindfully inviting peace.

Holiday Singing for Immigrants at the ICE Detention Center with Buddhist Peace Fellowship
Portland ICE Detention Center, 4310 SW Macadam

Here's a new reason to go singing at mid-day on Christmas Eve. ICE wrecks the holiday and breaks up families by detaining immigrants at the ICE office on SW Macadam before sending them to detention facilities at NORCOR or Tacoma. As a statement of solidarity, join us on Christmas Eve day at noon, at the Southwest corner of the ICE building. Bring signs supporting immigrants.

We invite people of all faiths, no faith, and agnostics to join us as we sing Feliz Navidad, Jingle Bells, Cielito Lindo, and other songs. Alternative lyrics will be available for singing to some melodies that may be familiar. If you're not into singing, come listen and stand in silent vigil, with respect for the suffering caused by US immigration policies.

Love Letters to Net Neutral Municipal Broadband
Portland City Hall, 1221 SW 4th

Roses are red, violets are blue, we need net neutrality and public ownership too! Hope you like typewriters, this month's event will feature a lot of them.

We are demanding the city immediately prioritize the development of a municipal broadband network.

Comcast and other large internet service providers have successfully lobbied to repeal net neutrality, sell information about what you do online, and prevent localities from properly regulating them. Municipal broadband is the last line of defense against internet service provider abuses which threaten freedom of information, digital equality, and democracy itself.

Municipal broadband is something many cities such as Tacoma, WA and Sandy, OR already have. In Portland we have been planning to build a municipal broadband network decades, now that our internet freedoms are under attack, it’s an idea whose time has come.
