Portland, OR 97232, US (map)

Book discussion: Timothy Snyder, ON TYRANNY, 20 Lessons from the 20th Century

  • Four Sundays: July 16, August 6, September 10, October 1
  • Time: 12-2pm
  • Location: Multdems HQ, 3551 Sandy Boulevard

How to participate: Sign up in advance for one or all meetings by sending an email to 4vc2@lesliedavis.net.

Please join fellow Dems for a discussion of this brief, instructive book. We will take up 5 of the 20 lessons at each group. On Sunday, July 16, at 12-2pm, we will discuss the first 5 principles:

  1. Do not obey in advance.
  2. Defend institutions.
  3. Beware the one-party state.
  4. Take responsibility for the face of the world.
  5. Remember professional ethics.

Our discussion will follow the 3-step model, What? So what? Now what?

  • The first task – What? - is to understand each lesson well enough to explain it in your own words.
  • The second task – So what? – is to interpret each lesson and identify current, real-life examples.
  • The third task – Now what? – is to plan concrete, effective actions that implement the lesson.

But this won’t be merely an intellectual exercise. Every participant will walk out of the discussion with a plan to do at least one thing – a specific, tangible action – that will build wider engagement and small-d democracy. Please join us.

Leslie Davis, discussion leader, has done graduate work in European history at UCLA, where she earned an M.A., and at U of O, where she was a Ph.D. student and Graduate Teaching Fellow.

Timothy Snyder, author, is a professor of history at Yale University. A scholar of twentieth-century central and eastern Europe, he has written several books, including Bloodlands: Between Hitler and Stalin and Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning. He is a member of the Committee on Conscience of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism … Our advantage is that we might learn from their experience." –Snyder
