Description

About the theme: inspired by the activism of advocates in the community of people with disabilities, "Nothing About Us Without Us" represents that OPAL pushes for self-determination and inclusion of all people in the policies which affect us - low income people, people of color, people with disabilities and more. All OPAL, BRU, and YEJA campaigns are led by highly-impacted people, and the leadership of people with disabilities in Bus Riders Unite also inspired us to choose this theme.

Every year, OPAL hosts Voices of the People’s History, an event that celebrates diverse movement leaders by sharing their stories, in their own words. Members of our community perform readings of notable speeches and essays from inspiring figures past and present, a radically-empowering opportunity to hear the echoes of history in the present day. It’s a yearly gathering that brings us closer together while strengthening our resolve to fight for racial, social and economic justice. It’s important for us to amplify movement leaders, because we know that nobody else can tell our stories. We have to do this for ourselves.

Through Voices, we emphasize that our struggles are a continuation of past struggles – and justice has always had champions. All modern organizers stand on the shoulders of the giants whose words and voices we celebrate.

The 2017 Voices event returns the Curious Comedy Theater on the evening of July 11th. Curious Comedy Theatre, located in heart of Vanport Square, is accessible by public transportation via buses #6, 44, 72, and is wheelchair accessible. Parking is available at no charge behind Vanport Square. Bike parking is available outside of the theatre doors and outside Old Town Pizza around the corner. Curious Comedy is an all-ages venue, but tickets are required for children who need to sit in their own seat.

The hosted hors d’oeuvres will feature tasty and filling selections for most dietary needs: gluten free, vegetarian/vegan. Please let us know in advance of any considerations which you may need to make your evening enjoyable and comfortable with us!

Tickets go on sale April 19th, and will sell out well in advance of the event. Mark your calendars!

Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information call Shawn at 503 774 4503 or email shawn@opalpdx.org

OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon - OPAL is a community organizing & advocacy organization working with low-income & communities of color to educate, engage & empower.

Bus Riders Unite, a project of OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon, is a membership organization that represents transit-dependent people. When we rely on public transit, we’re likely also reliant upon availability of housing choices, alternative transit options (like bike and pedestrian infrastructure), and to have less access to green spaces. Transportation is at the center of our lives, connecting us to the places where we live, work, learn, pray and play. BRU doesn’t only address transportation, but rather brings the perspective of transit-dependent people to the decision-making that affects all matter of policy related to the built environment.

Youth Environmental Justice Alliance (YEJA) develops low-income youth and youth of color leaders through political education, campaign organizing, and skill-building to address issues of Environmental Justice. The leadership program creates a space for marginalized youth to take action on the issues that directly impact them and their communities.
