Meeting the Challenge of American Immigration

Congregation Beth Israel, 1972 NW Flanders
1972 NW Flanders Street
Portland, OR 97209, US (map)

In the moment when there is increasing momentum and support for legislative action to address immigration, Ali Noorani will discuss his book, There Goes the Neighborhood, a counter-intuitive exploration of the challenges immigration brings to American communities and how to overcome them. For this book, Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum and sought-after commentator, interviewed nearly sixty politically conservative or moderate leaders from law enforcement, business, immigrant, and faith communities to illustrate the challenges and opportunities they face. This discussion will focus on the role of culture and values in America’s immigration debate, and how diverse communities work to make America a welcome place for long-established citizens and new arrivals alike.
