Gendering Race: Connections Between Racism & Sexism
Marylhurst University

Dr. Ayako Takamori’s teaching and research is driven by an enduring interest in how identities are negotiated and mediated across borders and in post-conflict contexts through cultural citizenship and activism. Drawing on her background in sociocultural anthropology, her work is conceived at the interdisciplinary juncture of Asian Studies and Asian American Studies, and her areas of expertise span comparative race and ethnicity, transnationalism and globalization, nationalism and multiculturalism, gender and sexuality, and media and visual cultures. She is also trained in documentary film and video production. From 2011-2013, she held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Tokyo through the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Her aim as an educator is to forge pathways of social justice and belonging for students, in which higher education provides students with tools to strengthen communities and dismantle existing systems of inequality.

The Marylhurst Speaker Series is hosted by Marylhurst University’s Department of Interdisciplinary and Applied Liberal Arts.

Start by attending Resolve to Resist: a two-part series to encourage women and others who don’t see themselves represented in the political arena to take the lead. Hear how others have done it: how they started and what their journeys looked like. Learn about culturally and gender-specific resources and leadership programs available to help you GET READY to RUN! Both sessions are informative and interactive. So let’s get started! Because we all have to be the change to see the change.

SESSION 2: RUNNING THE RACE Get the run-down on elected positions, running for office, and how you can become involved. Panelists will address what it means to be a candidate, how to get started, and how to bring attention to the needs and issues too often overlooked in our political system.

This session will cover:

  • How to bring attention to overlooked needs and issues

Social Justice Training: Developing Inclusive Practices

COURSE DESCRIPTION

  • Power Dynamics, Race and Culture
  • Internalized Racism and The White Gaze
  • Inclusive Practice – Pragmatic answers to Organizational Issues
  • Effective outreach models, partnerships, other alternatives

Regarding each topic we will go down to very specific topics, like perceived microaggressions, tokenism, appropriation, and other manifestations of structural power dynamics that play out daily in our workplace with co-workers and when working with clients/service users. The first two parts outline the specific dynamics that occur in non-profit and other practices, and the last part addresses questions raised in the beginning about practice.

Instead of traditional outreach and organizational models, the training discusses alternative ones like accessibility, and collaborative partnerships that are culturally appropriate.

Presented by: Anna Vo Anna Vo (they/their/theirs) has lectured on inclusion, race, and social justice on four continents, with the outcomes of affecting institutional and organizational change. A native Vietnamese speaker, experienced youth worker, programmer and educator focusing on the empowerment of young people, students and People of Color. In the three years they have resided in Portland and the USA, they have professionally trained staff from over 100 organizations in Oregon around Inclusion, Trauma-Informed Care, Restorative Justice, Inter-cultural Communication, and STEM and Art Practices. In the past they have lived in 8 countries. and previously taught workshops regarding cultural inclusion and working with asylum seekers at the Alice Salomon University for Social Work in Berlin, Germany.

Social Justice Training: Disability & Equity

CLASS DESCRIPTION This presentation will engage participants in learning from life experiences of people with disabilities and the disability rights movement. Presenters will discuss where the gaps lie in the inclusion of people with disabilities, centering on those with identities that are underrepresented or systemically marginalized. With that background in mind, presenters will share recommendations for including people with disabilities in equity conversations such as the ten principles of disability justice. Participants will work in small groups to talk about these issues and begin to make plans on how to address them in their organizations and advocacy work.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES. PARTICIPANTS WILL:

  • Understand disability rights history and the ways communities of color have been underrepresented in the disability rights movement and disability services.
  • Learn practical steps of how to include disability as part of the equity conversation, including recommendations from the - presenters and ideas from fellow participants. Be equipped with a plan of how to move forward in including people with disabilities.

BASIC OUTLINE

  • Social justice and disability – history of disability, challenges of the disability rights movement relating to race.
  • Individual stories – presenters Allison and Keirsi share their personal stories about living with disability.
  • Recommendations – ideas for how to be allies and practical suggestions for including disability in equity conversations.
  • Group discussions – participants add their ideas to the recommendations, prioritize where they want to start, and create a basic plan to get started in this work.

Social Justice Training: Domestic Violence in Russian-Speaking Communitites

Serving immigrant/refugee communities requires knowledge and understanding of their culture and language, and barriers that people from these communities are facing. This training addresses the provision of culturally competent services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault based on the experience of working with Russian–speaking and other immigrant communities.

Social Justice Training: Effects of Trauma & Domestic Violence on Youth

In this interactive session, participants will learn about how exposure to domestic violence specifically impacts children, youth, and family dynamics. Importantly, participants will also learn how children and youth heal through restorative and transformative safe attachment, culture, and connection to community, and exactly how you can support children recovering from the trauma of family violence – no matter what your role is. This session is built on an intersectional, anti-oppression foundation which is woven in to all content.

Social Justice Training: Intersectional Equity; Intersectional Privilege 101

CLASS DESCRIPTION

This workshop introduces participants to the concept of intersectional equity which explores how systemic inequities accord privilege and marginalization to virtually all social identities. In this interactive and participant-driven workshop, attendees will improve their understanding of intersected identities and learn to leverage the aspects privilege held to dismantle systemic inequities and encourage authentic inclusion.

Participants will be able to discern the supra-narratives which contribute to systemic inequities. They will have a better understanding of the areas in which they hold more privilege than others as well as the areas in which they might hold less privilege. In addition, participants will be able to determine how they might use their aspects of privilege to create and support a more equitable environment for all social identities.

Social Justice Training: Sexism 102

CLASS DESCRIPTION

An understanding of gender-based oppression is vital for everyone invested in ending violence. During this training, we will discuss how sexism is a form of power-based violence, as well as the ways it intersects with other systems of oppression. We will explore examples of contemporary and historic strategies that have been used to resist sexism – including skills that can be used by individuals and communities.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES. PARTICIPANTS WILL:

  • Understand patriarchy and the various levels at which it exists
  • Identify how experiences of sexism vary depending on factors such as race, class, gender identity, age, ability, etc.
  • Gain tools for solidarity and interrupting sexism
  • Become familiar with examples of women-led community activism and resistance

Social Justice Training: Trauma Informed Care

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Outlines adverse childhood experiences, short-term and long-term effects of trauma, PTSD and other analyses of trauma and how it psychologically, socially and developmentally affects children, adults and most plausibly our clients. We run through the importance and modes of Trauma-Informed care and possible triggers in our workplaces. We compare models of delivery in elementary and middle school settings with a trauma-informed lens vs. a non-informed lens. We will also learn what a trauma-informed inclusive practice might look like.
