Right to the City – a radical municipalist reading group
Social Justice Action Center

We’ve crafted a syllabus designed to analyze how space is shaped, and in turn shapes us. To understand how the city is crafted by the forces of globalization and urban planning; institutionally controlled by the military and the bank. And a syllabus that leaves ample time to discuss where we go from here – The Right to the City, Portland’s very own history of neighborhood organizing, and the theory behind the burgeoning worldwide interest in Municipalism.

We meet at the social justice action center monthly – August 13th, 3-5 is the first meeting.

This month, we are beginning the reading group with the “Right to the City” movement and the theory that backs it. You are likely already familiarized with this framework as it has influenced houseless rights’ organizations and Occupy in 2011. The Right to the City unfolds a critical conversation about the human need to shape space and advances the notion of the Commons as an essential political building block.

The homework is here – with videos, theory, and history: bit.ly/right2theCity

Hopefully you will be available to join the conversation; we look forward to your experience, insights, and company.

Topics for all 6 weeks include: 1. The Right to the City 2. Globalization and Urban Planning 3. Portland HIstory 4. Military Urbanism 5. Libertarian Municipalism, Social Ecology and Democratic Confederalism 6. Municipal Movements Across the world.

Follow us here: https://www.facebook.com/dontwaitdemandutopia/

Email us at DemandUtopia@ProtonMail.Com with any questions about this 6-part curriculum, and access the full syllabus here: Bit.Ly/runripcity

Know Your City: Celebrate Our Leaders
Q Center

COME JOIN US TO CELEBRATE: After eight successful years of leadership in civic empowerment and creative placemaking, we at Know Your City have a special announcement from our board and two of our staff members, Cameron Whitten and Lydia Grijalva: Cameron is stepping down as Executive Director, and Lydia Grijalva is stepping up as our Interim Executive Director.

Cameron Whitten has served with Know Your City since 2013. First, as a Board Member, then as Board President, and since September 2015, Executive Director. After two years of service, Cameron is leaving his position as Executive Director.

We would like to publically thank Cameron for everything he has done to make KYC what it is today. His leadership has been pivotal in setting the groundwork for us to leverage our impact in Portland.

But don’t worry! He’ll still be around. You can catch Cameron leading the Hidden History of Albina and People’s History of Portland tours, and guest starring in special events. No matter where he goes, Cameron will always be a part of our Know Your City family. Cameron has made sacrifices time and time again to ensure that these important programs were successful. Cameron has given so much to our organization, and we’re so thankful to have had him on staff.

Additionally, we are honored to welcome Lydia as our Interim Director. Already, we see that she is a capable, strategic, and passionate leader who is sure to facilitate continued success for Know Your City. We can’t wait to see what the future brings!

Come join us at the Q Center for a potluck and to celebrate our leaders!

Jade International Night Market - 1st Night
PCC SE

The Jade International Night Market is a crucial tool to help support local small businesses in the Jade District neighborhood. The annual summer event provides a space to celebrate and recognize the diversity and culture of the communities who live and work in the Jade District and sheds light on the issues impacting a neighborhood in transition.

The Jade International Night Market takes place every year and provides a unique cultural event that reflects the diversity of the Jade District communities. We envision an event that supports and roots the Jade District community in place, while providing an opportunity for community members and businesses to benefit economically from the event.

Last year, the Jade International Night Market brought over 25,000 visitors to Southeast 82nd Ave each weekend to participate in a community-driven event in an area that is historically underserved. The Jade District is centered around Southeast 82nd Avenue and Division Street. The goal of the Jade District is to build social and economic capacity, while mitigating displacement in the face of gentrification pressures.

Come and enjoy authentic international cuisine, family friendly entertainment, a beer garden, and various activities.

Transportation: Free parking; plenty of space for bikes and served by the Division MAX Station and Trimet Bus Routes 4 and 72

Renters' Rights at Jade Market
PCC SE

Did you know that nearly half of Asian Americans are renters?

Even though Asians have the highest levels of education and employment, homeownership levels do not represent those efforts.

Renters in the Jade District see massive amounts of rent hikes and displacement generally, and as more low-income tenants are pushed further out, they're less likely to have the protections offered exclusively within Portland city limits at this time.

Come to The Community Alliance of Tenants booth (#228) at the Jade District Night Market on August 19 and August 26 to play games, learn your rights, and meet other renters.

We'll be answering your questions, blasting sweet tunes, and serving up snacks to get you going.

Two of the candidates BerniePDX has helped elect to local office will be present: Rita Moore (PPS Board) and Valdez Bravo (PCC Board) will briefly talk about the beauties and challenges of running and winning as a progressive and how we can continue Bernie's Political Revolution here in Portland.

For two years BerniePDX has provided a space to learn about and engage in important issues that impact our community and our country. We have much to celebrate: helping elect 6 progressive candidates, helping pass 2 ballot measures, building community, activist & organizer trainings, rallies, phonebanks, canvasses, debate parties, and more! We can't wait to celebrate our 2nd anniversary with you! Please share & invite your friends on Facebook!

Can you bring some food or supplies to the event? Please let us know here: bit.ly/2v4SaMc

We'll be making custom BerniePDX shirts! Bring your own or $5 to buy one there.

** BerniePDX is an all-volunteer, grassroots organization. We have no budget. Please consider bringing a few dollars to donate to the event, though it's not required to attend, eat, and enjoy.

Social Justice Saturdays Back 2 Revolucion
Revolución Coffee House

In 2016 Don't Shoot PDX began hosting our second Saturday gatherings. In the months following it's exciting to see how small groups gathering and sharing ideas has helped build our messaging for social justice in a way that directly influences relationships in schools, work and community!!! Thank you for working towards a better future with your HEART and TIME. This months gathering will be focused toward bridging our work in Bystander Training and Intervention, Community Safety and Organizing Safe Neighborhoods, Family Advocacy and Human Rights including Hate Crime Reporting.

Community Safety and Organizing Safe Neighborhoods, Family Advocacy and Human Rights including Hate Crime Reporting has become the evolution of our organizing and we need all hands on deck. After a dozen or so bystander trainings the feedback is showing that there is a serious GAP in community engagement!!

This is a call out to legal professionals, photographers, writers and people who want to become active advocates against racism and hate in their communities.

Dont Shoot Portland - In August 2014 we agreed to take political action and organize at Dawson Park to be in solidarity with the growing response from Ferguson, MO #MikeBrown
