Right to the City – a radical municipalist reading group
Social Justice Action Center, 400 SE 12th

We’ve crafted a syllabus designed to analyze how space is shaped, and in turn shapes us. To understand how the city is crafted by the forces of globalization and urban planning; institutionally controlled by the military and the bank. And a syllabus that leaves ample time to discuss where we go from here – The Right to the City, Portland’s very own history of neighborhood organizing, and the theory behind the burgeoning worldwide interest in Municipalism.

We meet at the social justice action center monthly – August 13th, 3-5 is the first meeting.

This month, we are beginning the reading group with the “Right to the City” movement and the theory that backs it. You are likely already familiarized with this framework as it has influenced houseless rights’ organizations and Occupy in 2011. The Right to the City unfolds a critical conversation about the human need to shape space and advances the notion of the Commons as an essential political building block.

The homework is here – with videos, theory, and history: bit.ly/right2theCity

Hopefully you will be available to join the conversation; we look forward to your experience, insights, and company.

Topics for all 6 weeks include: 1. The Right to the City 2. Globalization and Urban Planning 3. Portland HIstory 4. Military Urbanism 5. Libertarian Municipalism, Social Ecology and Democratic Confederalism 6. Municipal Movements Across the world.

Portland Assembly July Neighborhood Spokescouncil
Sunnyside Centenary United Methodist Church

A Spokescouncil has been called for Sunday July 9th from 11am-1pm at the Sunnyside Centenary Methodist Church on 35th and Yamhill.

This spokescouncil (spokes) has been called to hear three proposals —available on Loomio and by email.

We still need a facilitator for the discussion so please contact us if you are available to assist us with this task.

Neighborhood Action Councils (NAC) are encouraged to send as many organizers as interested or available to represent them. In addition to voting, spokes-representatives will have a chance to meet other organizers within the Portland Assembly network.

So please, bring literature to share, zines to swap and pick up some flyers for canvassing!

As usual, there will be potluck style food. Bring a dish if you like! (if homemade, please label ingredients). This event will have childcare, coffee and is wheelchair accessible.

We’re excitedly looking forward this much-needed chance to reconvene for Portland Assembly's third Spokescouncil!

Know Your City: Celebrate Our Leaders
Q Center, 4115 N Mississippi

COME JOIN US TO CELEBRATE: After eight successful years of leadership in civic empowerment and creative placemaking, we at Know Your City have a special announcement from our board and two of our staff members, Cameron Whitten and Lydia Grijalva: Cameron is stepping down as Executive Director, and Lydia Grijalva is stepping up as our Interim Executive Director.

Cameron Whitten has served with Know Your City since 2013. First, as a Board Member, then as Board President, and since September 2015, Executive Director. After two years of service, Cameron is leaving his position as Executive Director.

We would like to publically thank Cameron for everything he has done to make KYC what it is today. His leadership has been pivotal in setting the groundwork for us to leverage our impact in Portland.

But don’t worry! He’ll still be around. You can catch Cameron leading the Hidden History of Albina and People’s History of Portland tours, and guest starring in special events. No matter where he goes, Cameron will always be a part of our Know Your City family. Cameron has made sacrifices time and time again to ensure that these important programs were successful. Cameron has given so much to our organization, and we’re so thankful to have had him on staff.

Additionally, we are honored to welcome Lydia as our Interim Director. Already, we see that she is a capable, strategic, and passionate leader who is sure to facilitate continued success for Know Your City. We can’t wait to see what the future brings!

Come join us at the Q Center for a potluck and to celebrate our leaders!
