Mail Night: CR PDX & Call to Safety/Stroll PDX
In Other Words, 14 NE Killingsworth

Call to Safety and Stroll PDX are partnering with Critical Resistance Portland for a joint solidarity letter & postcard writing night.

Call to Safety/ Stroll PDX & CR PDX believe that the Prison Industrial Complex is a source of immense harm in our communities and we want to bring awareness to the many ways in which our loved ones and community members are criminalized and caged for simply surviving. We'll be highlighting sex workers at this event as one the groups highly targeted and criminalized by policing and the prison industrial complex.

Please join us for a night of solidarity post card & letter writing to both Stroll PDX/Call to Safety's list of nationally imprisoned sex workers & CR PDX's list of folks in Oregon and Washington prisons. We'll have letters to respond to and postcards and message templates for folks to use as well as more information on how to get involved in supporting our shared work of supporting those most impacted by the prison industrial complex and working towards PIC abolition.

Transportation: On street parking is available near event site. There is no off street parking or nearby dedicated disability parking spot unfortunately. The #4, #44, #72, and #6 all run nearby the event location.

Accessibility: In Other Words is not a scent free space but is low scent and we'll provide scent free handsoap for the event.

There are no stairs and the floor is mostly level hardwood with a slight rise/ramp up in to the main event space.

About CR: Critical Resistance seeks to build an international movement to end the Prison Industrial Complex by challenging the belief that caging and controlling people makes us safe. We believe that basic necessities such as food, shelter, and freedom are what really make our communities secure. As such, our work is part of global struggles against inequality and powerlessness. The success of the movement requires that it reflect communities most affected by the PIC. Because we seek to abolish the PIC, we cannot support any work that extends its life or scope.

About Call to Safety: Working to fulfill our mission of ending domestic and sexual violence by providing confidential support services and education to empower our community, Call to Safety provides a comprehensive 24/7 crisis line, follow-up advocacy for survivors, support groups, community outreach and education, and sexual assault medical advocacy. We can support crisis line callers in any language through our international language bank, and connect survivors to local culturally-specific resources or co-advocacy. Call to Safety advocates provide every caller with a needs assessment, peer support, safety planning, crisis intervention, and information and referrals to community resources. Our advocates work with specific populations to provide culturally relevant and specialized services for survivors experiencing homelessness, survivors with developmental and intellectual disabilities, and sex workers. Sexual assault advocacy provides specialized services to survivors of sexual assault.

About Stroll PDX:

Stroll PDX is a volunteer based organization that emphasizes harm reduction, intersectional feminism, and grass root community outreach. We focus on empowering sex workers of all forms through lobbying, organizing support groups, fundraising for legal resources, and offering clothing and food to houseless women, transgender individuals, and low income sex workers. We also publish Working it Portland, a Sex Worker run and written zine. While all individuals are welcome to volunteer we are determined to give leadership roles to Sex Workers and put the rights of POC Trans Sex workers at the forefront of our fight for sex workers rights.

Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc.: Stand up for the Community Benefits Agreement!
Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc.

The City of Portland has the opportunity to deeply impact our region through a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) which serves everyone in our community. By implementing a model for shared wealth creation through public investment, Portland can create access to high-road jobs with good wages and benefits for our communities of color and for women - for those who have historically been excluded from these career pathways.

The CBA also provides funding for valuable pre-apprenticeship training programs offered by organizations like Oregon Tradeswomen, Construction Hope, and Portland Youth Builders. The City Council is slated to vote on the future implementation of the CBA in early August!

Come to the OTI office from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm on Tuesday, August 8th. We will write postcards to Mayor Wheeler to make sure he knows we care that our city tax dollars are spent fairly.

We will provide some snacks and of course, kids are welcome!

THANK YOU!

Say No to Censorship and War! (Jewish Voice for Peace)
Old Salt Marketplace

A Letter-Writing Party with Portland JVP

Event Description: This Saturday, join the Portland chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace in demanding our elected representatives in the senate refuse a path toward censorship and war!

We'll be writing two letters. 1) We insist Senator Wyden end his sponsorship of SB 720, the Israel Anti-Boycott Act. This bill would criminalize American individuals and companies who use the non-violent Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) as a strategy to shed light on and oppose unjust policies toward Palestinians by Israel. You don't need to support BDS to see the danger of criminalizing political action and free speech. Let's defend our constitutional right to free speech and urge Senator Wyden to drop his sponsorship of this draconian bill!

2) We encourage Senators Merkely and Wyden not to follow Donald Trump's disastrous diplomatic breakdown and warmongering with Iran. Tell our senators: No new sanctions, and No legislating the end of the Iran deal!

Please join us in the Carver Room behind Old Salt Marketplace any time from 3-5 PM, and make your voice heard! Bring your friends and families, and get to know your local JVP team over a cup of hot apple cider and plenty of sweets 'n' snacks. Letter-writing supplies will be provided. All are welcome to attend!
