Workers' Rights Board: Exploitation of Immigrant Carpenters
St. Charles Church Portland

Immigrant wood framers have been victims of rampant wage theft and exploitation in the midst of Portland’s construction boom. Over the past five years BOLI has received 148 prevailing-wage complaints and claims worth $1.12 million in Multnomah County alone. But workers are fighting back. They are organizing and demanding a raise to $27/hr on the principle that everyone deserves equal pay for equal work.

At the hearing we will hear testimony from:

  • Local construction workers about why they organizing, current treatment and exploitation by contractors, and why they believe equity policies within the construction industry are so important,
  • Wage theft experts who can place the rampant exploitation in the Portland-area within a broader context, and
  • Immigrant rights advocates on the importance of protect immigrant workers.

At Portland Jobs with Justice, we truly believe that an injury to one is an injury to all, and that showing up in solidarity and supporting each other’s struggles is vital to building a successful labor movement. In that spirit, we hope that you will be able to attend this important hearing!

Music by Bajo Salario. Free food, Spanish interpretation, and childcare will be available at the hearing. Email justin@jwjpdx.org if you will need translation or childcare.

Dinner starts at 6pm. Program starts at 6:30pm.

Get ICE out of Norcor! #IceResistanceRally
Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facilities (NORCOR), The Dalles

Join us this Saturday for an #IceResistanceRally on our 90th consecutive rally day, as we stand strong behind the recent action filed against NORCOR! We are gathering folks from all over Oregon and Washington to show NORCOR that we do not approve of the private Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) contract they currently hold as it does not reflect the values of the communities they are representing and NORCOR is not set up to be able to provide appropriate services for detainees in the first place.

Immigrant detainees being held here under the contract with ICE have been charged with federal immigration violations which are a civil matter, not criminal. We believe this is in violation of state law (OR 181A.820) and we support the lawsuit filed recently on behalf of local taxpayers which asks an Oregon judge to order NORCOR to end its contract and enjoin NORCOR from entering into similar contracts going forward. We want to see our local officials take a stand and protect all of our friends and neighbors as well as transparency and accountability from NORCOR as they work for us, the public.

We have lots of signs, flags and a couple of banners to share or feel free to bring your own! It is forecast in the 90's so bring sunscreen and some water, we will also have lots of cold water available on hand.

Indivisible Greater Vancouver, August Monthly Meeting
ILWU Local 4, Vancouver

Hi everyone! Our August 4th meeting is this Friday and we have some important agenda items and great speakers. Here's a sneak peak:

The first speaker, Dianna Mendoza (Catholic Services), works with refugee children and finding foster families for them in Vancouver. This fascinating program resettles youth from a wide variety of nations (either residing in refugee camps or immigration detention centers) into licensed, long-term foster homes. All youth are under 18 at the time of resettlement with no one who can care for them.

Gary Seeman, PhD, will speak briefly and then lead an interactive dialogue with attendees addressing the question, "How's this political climate affecting you?" Lots of take-aways here.

Janet Birgenheier, IGV member, will report on the results from Saturday's IGV Strategic Planning Retreat with proposed changes to our charter and focus moving forward. We need your input, so please attend!

In addition, IGV work groups will report out and new actions will be outlined for the August recess. All are welcome, of course, so bring your ideas, neighbors and friends.

NO BAN! NO WALL!
Portland International Airport

Donald Trump's new travel ban is in affect.

This ban means people from 6 Muslim majority country's will not be allowed into the US unless they have "close" business or family relationships, the ban describes family as parents, fiancés, spouses, children, son or daughter in law, siblings and step siblings but excludes grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws and grandchildren.

This ban is completely unnecessary, less than a quarter of terrorist attacks in the US are committed by people with Muslim backgrounds.

If we really wanted to keep terrorists out of this country we would ban white people.

Stand in solidarity with the people who will be banned from the US!

Start at the airport max stop.

Vancouver DACA Rally
Esther Short Park, Vancouver

SW LULAC and our FCRC rep Diana Avalos-Leos organized a save DACA rally at Ester Short park at 6 pm on Weds, August 30th.

Students under the protection of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals are holding their collective breath and hoping that DACA survives the current administration. They need this protection to have jobs, they need this protection to get financial aid for college. As educators, we know how important DACA is. When students have their status in jeopardy, it is much more difficult to engage them in school and get them invested in academia. Why give 100% in class when your entire future in this country is in jeopardy? We need to take action and raise our voice in defense of DACA. Governor Inslee signed in the REAL Hope Act (WA version of Dream Act) five years ago and some of my Dreamer students were able to meet with him and be present at the signing of the legislation.

Inslee wrote a great article that was picked up by CNN, here it is: http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/24/opinions/congress-protect-dreamers-inslee/index.html

On July 12, 2017, news broke that John Kelly, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security deflected responsibility for the fate of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA) and Temporary Protective Status (TPS) which, combined, protect over one million people from deportation.

In a meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Kelly told Members of Congress that the fate of the DACA and TPS programs were in the hands of white nationalist Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Right wing state politicians have given the Trump Administration until September 5th to end the DACA program.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and officials from nine other states on Thursday urged the Trump administration to end a program that’s allowed hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants to work in the country without fear of being deported.

March to Support our DREAMers
Western Oregon University, Monmouth

español abajo

Come join us as we march in support of the DREAMers in our community! Our goal is to pressure Congress to extend DACA and pass the DREAM Act, and to let the DREAMers among us know that we stand in solidarity with them. Documented and undocument members of our community deserve a chance to succeed, so come to the WOU Stadium at 1:30 on Sunday the 15th to show your support for the DREAMers of Monmouth-Independence and the surrounding area. We will march at 2:00 to Riverview Park where there will be speeches by the mayors of Monmouth and Independence as well as a representative of Congressman Kurt Schrader. Sign on to a letter from our community that we'll send out to our neighboring communities asking them to do the same. By organizing this march, we hope to inspire others to do the same and defend the DREAMers of our country.

Faith Groups Caravan to NORCOR
Ascension Catholic Church, 743 SE 76th

On October 28, Buddhist Peace Fellowship, Portland will join IMIrJ and other faith groups to caravan out to NORCOR in The Dalles, a public penal facility co-opted by private prison business to incarcerate immigrants abducted by ICE.

Besides the obvious war against immigrants, conditions there do not even meet the requirements for regular prisons (which we know are not great to begin with).

If you expect to have any difficulties getting to the meetup location at SE 76th Avenue, please comment on the Facebook event page and we will do our best to arrange transport for you. You may bring your own signs or use the ones provided by Gorge ICE Resistance. Maila Davenport will coordinate who will actually drive and who will ride with whom.

Get ICE out of NORCOR! #IceResistanceRally
Northern Oregon Regional Correctional Facilities (NORCOR), The Dalles

Join us for an #IceResistanceRally as we stand strong against NORCOR!

Caravan to the ICE out of NORCOR vigil - Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition
Ascension Catholic Church, 743 SE 76th

Join PIRC members and friends to go to The Dalles to stand together in vigil with the Gorge ICE Resistance to say to NORCOR prison "ICE OUT OF NORCOR" .

9:45 AM: Meet up in SE Portland at Ascension Catholic Church parking lot (743 SE 76th Ave) to leave at 10 AM Carpools will go from there to NORCOR Prison in The Dalles: 201 Webber St, The Dalles, OR 97058

2 Noon to 1:00 PM: Rally in front of NORCOR.

NORCOR is publicly owned detention facility. It is funded through 4 counties. As a way to increase revenue, NORCOR leases beds to ICE for immigrants in detention. This is in violation of the OR Sanctuary Law which states that OR state resources should not be used to support or aid Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities.

Immigrant detainees report the conditions at NORCOR are terrible. They have held 2 hunger strikes to get basic privileges such as milk, hot meals, blankets for the cold temperatures inside the facility, shoes (they are only issued sandals), family visits (currently denied to immigrant detainees), and prompt health care. The prison has only granted minimal improvements in conditions and not acted in good faith to promises made.

Every day of the week, the Gorge ICE Resistance holds a vigil to say ICE OUT OF NORCOR. Let's join them to support the call for IMMIGRANT JUSTICE--NO IMMIGRANT PRISONS. ICE OUT OF NORCOR.
