Food Justice Workshop at Zenger Farm (Coalition of Communities of Color)
Zenger Farm

Join the Coalition of Communities of Color for an interactive workshop on local food justice efforts in Lents! With stations located around beautiful Zenger Farm, you will learn and participate in discussions about Green Lents pollinator habitats and community orchards, Zenger farms very own Black Food Sovereignty Council, and seasonal first foods gathering with Wisdom of the Elders .

This event is free of charge, but registration is required. Youth are welcome to participate in workshops. Childcare and interpretation services are available upon request with a week notice (deadline May 12th).
Priority will be given to communities of color and low-income communities. Lunch will be provided. The workshop starts promptly at 10:00AM

                                Zenger Farm:

At Zenger Farm, we believe good food is a basic human right. We are a non-profit farm and wetland in outer southeast Portland dedicated to promoting sustainable food systems, environmental stewardship, community development and access to good food for all. Since 1999, Zenger Farm has been teaching people where good, healthy food comes from, how it’s grown, and the importance of eating it every day. In our first year, 200 children visited Zenger Farm. Last year, we hosted more than 10,000 visitors.

Zenger Farm has a robust community engagement program that includes cooking and nutrition workshops, cooking demonstrations, and community outreach events. 3,561 of our neighbors attended cooking workshops at Zenger Farm in 2016.

Many of these workshops were part of the Community Chef program, which celebrates the diverse food traditions represented in our neighborhood. This program supports food leaders to share their knowledge and experience through teaching and sharing nourishing dishes from their countries of origin. Currently, Community Chefs originate from Mexico, El Salvador, the Philippines, Bhutan and Nepal, and China.

              Black Food Sovereignty Council

The Black Food Sovereignty Council is made up of members of Portland’s diverse Black communities. We work collaboratively to build a prosperous, self-determined food system centered around strengthening community partnerships, promoting holistic health, cultural awareness, and economic development. This work grows out of our long history as stewards of the land and innovative caretakers of our communities and we stand on and draw from the work of our ancestors.

                         People and Pollinators

The Malden Court Community Orchard is a project of the nonprofit Green Lents. It is a young orchard located on the corner of SE 87th Ave and Flavel St. The public space contains over 250 native and fruit-bearing plants and was designed, with community input, for both people and pollinators.

In addition to the Orchard, Green Lents has supported the development of 5 other pollinator habitat enhancement projects. Native plants, staggered blooming, and nesting resources are a few of the habitat features that give pollinators, particularly native bees, a home in our harsh urban landscape. In this session we will talk about who our resident pollinators are, why we need them for sustainable local food systems, and simple ways we can incorporate their needs into land use decisions here in the Portland area as part of community-driven development.

Culture & Ecological Change: Seasonal First Foods, Climate
               Justice and Workforce Development

Learning about our natural first foods-how things have changed & what can we do to sustain them. Wisdom Workforce Development is a project for Wisdom of the Elders, Inc. which provides environmental assessment and habitat restoration training plus career pathway planning for Native American adults. Some of our partners in the Portland area include; Johnson Creek Watershed Council, Portland Parks & Recreation, Fender Farms, & Metro Water & Soil.

This workshop is possible because of the support of committed community members, East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District.

Coalition of Communities of Color - Our mission is to address socioeconomic disparities, institutional racism, and inequity of services experienced by our families, children and communities.

Ragtags Against Doom Food Justice Gathering
Laurelhurst Park

At our last meeting we agreed to link up with anyone growing food from different collectives and communities who wish to join with us in supporting marginalized communites and the grassroots community both to be resilient so that we may opt out succesfully from the exploitative dominant agricultural system by creating a decentralized municipal farm.

We believe doing this will address three world crises relating to food, climate and energy, and plus shift the power back to people struggling with street life and all other forms of survival under capitalism. Food justice is an integral part of racial, economic, social, and climate justice, worldwide. Together we can build a more equitable, localized, sustainable solution to hunger.

At this meeting we will hear a report back from the affinity group known as the "Divergence" and possibly other affinity groups, begin discussing the work already being done by other groups in the city of Portland with a similar focus, seek out how to build a municipal decentralized farm with allies, create teams to take on roles and tasks, prepare for 2018 and put together a text alert system.

Gathering at noon.

Meeting starts at 12:30 P.M.

Milenio.org Food Justice Free Farmers Market
Montavilla City Park

In Portland, Big Grocery dominates our food economy while funding political campaigns of those who hyper - police communities of color and the poor and also drive gentrification. This greed leaves thousands displaced and struggling without access to healthy food or resources to get it. Fight back with us by attending this FREE farmers market. Gardeners are needed to donate fresh produce so that we can make it available to families in need and bring it directly to high density areas and to people impacted by displacement. Please bring homegrown produce between 10-12 to the pavilion at Montevilla park. Growers can also pick a few items from the farm trade table if they donate their best to the Free Farmer's Market. No money allowed. This is how we subvert the Big Grocery Big Money Big Politics game and take action to feed our friends and community.

We will also have music, speakers, poets, and resources for empowerment and community building thoughout the day.

How you can help: Are you a person who is struggling to make it right now in Portland, Oregon? Come and join us for this community event. Bring a bag and shop at the FREE Farmer's Market.

Are you a gardener who is willing to donate fresh vegetables to this project? Please message Susan Anglada Bartley or just come to the park and bring what you can share. People willing to volunteer please contact as well.

This initiative is brought to you by Milenio.org in collaboration with Pueblo Unidos and local activists

Mazon: This is Hunger Exhibit in Portland
through Congregation Neveh Shalom

This Is Hunger Comes to Our Community!

The faces of hunger in America are both familiar and hidden from view, yet they are all too real and far too many. Congregation Neveh Shalom, Congregation Beth Israel and Oregon Food Bank are proud to host This Is Hunger, an interactive experience on wheels (literally, it’s a big rig!) brought to us by MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger

Inside the truck, the experience is divided into two parts. First, participants are invited to sit at a communal table and virtually “meet” real people struggling with hunger. Portraits are projected at each end of the table, one by one, as individuals share their stories in their own voices and in their own words. At the end of part one, participants are invited to engage in activities that deepen their awareness about the complexities of being hungry and join MAZON in educating the rest of our nation and advocating for change.

This Is Hunger is open to the community and will be Congregation Neveh Shalom 2900 SW Peaceful Lane, Portland, OR 97239 from September 1 – 7.

To see when the truck is open and reserve your free tickets, click on this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/this-is-hunger-or-congregation-neveh-shalom-congregation-beth-israel-tickets-36929196220

For questions, please contact: Daniela Meltzer, 503.293.7313, programs@nevehshalom.org. We look forward to seeing you in the truck!

World Food Day : John Teton of the Oregon-based International Food Security Treaty Association
World Affairs Council of Oregon

The right to food is a basic human right. Investing in sustainable food systems and rural development means addressing some of the major global challenges - from feeding the world’s growing population to protecting the global climate, and tackling some of the root causes of migration and displacement. On the occasion of World Food Day (sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), John Teton, founding director of the Oregon-based International Food Security Treaty Association discusses the International Food Security Treaty, a bold initiative that aims to fulfill the human right of freedom from hunger and protect it with enforceable international law.

Don't Shoot Portland's Hughes Memorial Community Service and Feed In
Hughes Memorial United Methodist Church, 111 NE Failing

On the 3rd Saturday of every month the members of Hughes Memorial Church host a community meal. This year we have been joining in to help! Not everyone has access to food regularly and this is one way to help distribute and collect resources.

We have collaborated with Hughes Memorial to host an ongoing clothing and hospitality kits donation drop point while using Saturday's for neighborhood supported prep and distribution of warm meals!! On 3rd Saturdays we take to the streets #NVDA to deliver food to the houseless community. In APRIL we began gardening so that we can continue to distribute fresh food to those in need!! Join Us!!

Please join us on December 16th at 10:00 am to volunteer, donate, learn more!
