Class War For Christmas Rally
Pioneer Courthouse Square

Congress passed a tax bill last week that redistributes over a trillion dollars from working people into the pockets of the very wealthy. The passage of this tax scam declares class war on working people, students, children, parents, the elderly-- basically everyone in our country except the billionaires.

We are ready to fight!! Join us at Pioneer Square on December 17 at 3 for some marching, protesting, revolutionary caroling, and some good old fashion holiday class war.

Wear red and/or festive attire!

Donald Trump and the Working Class
SEIU Local 49, 3536 SE 26th

Portland Democratic Socialists of America presents:

"Donald Trump and the Working Class: How We Got Here and How to Respond"

How on earth did this comically garish capitalist get elected President of the United States? Did he really win by gaining the support of the white working class? Did anyone really believe this gaudy fat-cat would be a voice for working Americans? What should the Left do now that he’s in office?

Join the Portland, OR chapter of Democratic Socialists of America as we host a conversation between local and prolific journalist Arun Gupta and University of Oregon professor Joe Lowndes.

Arun Gupta reports nationwide on politics, the economy, labor, food, immigration, the environment, and social movements on the left and right for publications including The Nation, YES Magazine, The Progressive, In These Times, the Raw Story, Telesur, the Guardian, and the Washington Post. He is a founder of the Occupied Wall Street Journal, former international news editor of The Guardian Newsweekly, and a Lannan Foundation writing fellow. He is writing a book, Bacon as a Weapon of Mass Destruction: A Junk-Food Loving Chef's Inquiry Into Taste, for The New Press.

Joe Lowndes is an associate professor of political science at the University of Oregon, where he studies right-wing movements, populism, and racial politics. He has been active for three decades in activism in antiracist, green, and labor politics. He is a member of AFT Oregon, AAUP Oregon, and is on the executive council of local 3209, United Academics. He is the author of From the New Deal to the New Right: Race and the Southern Origins of Modern Conservatism, and co-editor of Race and American Political Development. He is currently writing a book on Right-wing populism in the US.

No More Charlottesvilles! How Can Socialists Fight the Right?
PSU Smith Center, 1825 SW Broadway

Join Portland State International Socialist Organization, the Portland chapter of Democratic Socialists of America, and Socialist Alternative Portland for a panel and discussion on socialist strategies for fighting the right.

On August 12th a mobilization of the far right held a “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. It was a gathering of white nationalists, white supremacists, the alt-right, and neo-Nazis intended to intimidate and publicly affirm their racism, anti-semitism, misogyny, and homophobia. All this was present in chants and slogans of “Blood and soil,” “White lives matter,” “You will not replace us,” “Jews will not replace us,” and the waving of confederate flags, Nazi flags, and other white supremacist symbols.

The murder of anti-racist activist Heather Heyer and the injury of several others by a fascist vigilante who drove his car into a section of counterprotesters on Saturday demonstrates the urgency for organized and mass response to mobilizations by the far right.

There are lessons to take away from the events in Charlottesville. As we move forward and continue the fight, we must continue to unite the broadest and largest layer of people committed to opposing bigotry, use the most effective strategies, and keep one another safe. That’s socialists, unions, liberals, students, worshippers, and more to defend every oppressed group and build the combativity and confidence of our side in stopping the Right in its tracks.

The white supremacist group Patriot Prayer is planning an event in Portland in early September and will continue to hold their "Freedom Rallies" in our city. We must discuss strategies and tactics for fighting them now and for fighting the system that breeds their racist, homophobic, Islamaphobic, sexist, ableist ideology.

Join the ISO, DSA, and SA in a discussion on socialist strategies to isolate the Right, create united coalitions against them, and the socialist strategy to win.

Rally/March Against White Nationalism
Terry Schrunk Plaza

Portland Stands United Against Hate will be mobilizing again to confront a white nationalist gathering in our town. We intend to draw out thousands to discourage these racists and haters.

Joey Gibson’s “Patriot Prayer” is mobilizing on September 10th a “Portland Freedom March — Entire Nation” featuring Billy Sessions, a Confederate monument defender, who has been active in violent clashes with those trying to remove these symbols of slavery and racism.

The merging of the “old South” rebellion with “alt-right” white nationalism is an ominous development. Their plan is to instill fear and attack Portland’s Immigrant, Muslim, Jewish, Indigenous, Black and LGBTQ+ communities.

After the rally we will be marching to the Salmon St. Fountain. We will be collaborating with Portland's Resistance and are in communication with Rose City Antifa. We are committed to community safety and protecting marginalized communities. Ours will be a disciplined and secure event.

October Conference: Confronting the Far Right

“Patriot” rallies are not an isolated phenomenon. Rather, they represent an emboldening of the right-wing across this country, whose rhetoric and actions have been supported by an openly racist, misogynist, bigoted administration in the White House.

PSUAH plans to host a day long conference to include expert education on the white nationalist movement with extensive time for local groups and activists to integrate that learning into coherent strategies for building the Portland left as well as fighting the Right.

Stay tuned for further details.

Portland Democratic Socialists of America Reproductive Justice Panel & Happy Hour
Lucky Labrador Brew Pub on N Killingsworth, 1700 N Killingsworth

The panel from last spring’s successful Reproductive Justice event will join us again to continue where we left off. They will take up the question of how to expand our vision of abortion and reproductive rights to a broader intersectional analysis of reproductive justice—and what a socialist lens brings to this feminist vision. This time, we’ll be at Lucky Lab NORTH from 7-9 - with drinks and food available at the bar, and plenty of time to socialize!

Panelists:

Johanna Brenner is an American feminist and sociologist whose writing and thought is in the socialist-feminist vein. In 1981 she began teaching in the sociology department at Portland State University where she served from 1982 to 2005 as coordinator of its women's studies program. She is now emeritus professor. Brenner has contributed to New Left Review, Monthly Review and other periodicals. In 1993 she worked with Catherine Sameh and Kathryn Tetrick to open In Other Words Women's Books and Resources.

Cordella Hopson is an activist and social worker who has a long history of organizing around childcare and communities of color in Portland. She has worked with the Albina Ministerial Alliance Coalition for Justice and Police Reform to advocate for community oversight as well as Self Enhancement, Inc., a non-profit that is dedicated to guiding underserved youth to realize their full potential through academic, sports, wellness and job shadowing programs.

Zeenia Junkeer is the Director of Equity and Community Engagement for NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon and a primary care Naturopathic physician, working to identify ways to make health care more accessible for communities of color through the practice of culturally affirming and responsive care. Junkeer describes her work as “at the intersection of advocating for equitable preventative health and wellness practices and culturally appropriate support for communities disproportionately affected by poverty, marginalization and oppression.”

Marilou Carrera is a Portland-based reproductive justice advocate and health equity practitioner with a background in public health and nursing. She is an alumni of the first cohort of the We Are BRAVE regional reproductive justice coalition (Building Reproductive Autonomy and Voices for Equity). Much of Marilou's journey toward reproductive justice began with direct services, but her experiences as an immigrant and a Filipina & Japanese woman understanding her queer identity have informed a broader understanding of what reproductive justice means. She currently manages the community health improvement plan for the Oregon Health Equity Alliance.

Come talk about strategy for Portland DSA around Medicare for All and other health care issues.

Portland DSA has successfully launched a Medicare for All campaign based on listening focused canvassing. We have gathered support for the Health Care for All Oregon coalition, and found people interested in learning more about DSA. We have held post-canvass story-based community meetings where people shared experiences with failures of private insurance driven for profit care, and learned more about Medicare for All / single payer.

We have also joined the Yes for Healthcare / Yes on Measure 101 campaign, to save Oregon Health Plan coverage for 350,000 Oregonians under Medicaid expansion in the January 23, 2018 special election. Yes on 101 is a fight to prevent great suffering, and also to defend the revenue base for HCAO’s future state level Medicare for All type plan.

Now we need to plan Portland DSA’s next steps in healthcare campaigning, and develop a cohesive approach for the coming year and beyond.

How can we best support Yes for Healthcare on January 23? How can we use Yes on 101 to educate about Improved Medicare for All without confusing people?

Beyond canvassing, what kinds of actions, events and activities should our Medicare for All Campaign organize, to engage members and new members and educate the public?

How can Medicare for All organizing be intersectional, addressing the needs and priorities of racial health equity for people of color, women’s health equity and reproductive justice, LGBTQ health needs, and working class income and job related health care issues? How does capitalist health oppression shape and connect those needs?

How should Portland DSA work within HCAO? Can we build both the Improved Medicare for All movement, and also DSA? How does our local Medicare for All campaign fit into the recently launched national campaign? How does this issue fit into Portland DSA’s approach to electoral and ballot measure politics?

What other health care campaign ideas do members have? How can we use our Medicare for All and Measure 101 work to build up our skills, identify existing strengths members have, and encourge people to step up to take the lead in campaign actions and events?

There will be other opportunities to engage in this discussion.

Rally: Net Neutrality & Free, Public Internet Now!
East side of the Hawthorne Bridge (SE Grand & Madison)

The time is now to fight back against Comcast, Verizon and AT&T and protect Net Neutrality by launching free, public broadband Internet in Portland. Only YOU can help save Net Neutrality by standing up and fighting back.

To date, the big three Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have donated a combined $101 million to Congress, with almost equal donations to both major parties. Congress and the FCC are hopelessly compromised on this issue, and will not do the right thing for the people — so let’s ditch the big corporations and build free, municipal broadband internet in Portland.

Join the resistance against increased corporate takeover of our Internet. Bring signs for visibility during drive time. #Resistance #NetNeutrality

P.S. The FCC vote on Net Neutrality is Thursday.
